overview

In this project, my task was to redesign the existing competition service for athletes, teams, and clubs on the RussiaRunning platform. The goal was to update the user interface (UI) and identify the problems that users faced while using the service. My role was to offer solutions to solve these problems.

Research

I started by interviewing technical support to understand frequent problems faced by users. I also analyzed the service's click map and observed 50 user interaction sessions via web visor. Of these sessions, 30% were on the desktop version and 70% on the mobile version. From my research, I found the following problems faced by users:

  1. The rules of participation in the championship were unclear because the information on how to participate was hidden in the championship text description.

  2. There were no clear descriptions of the nominations, or they were also inside a long championship text description.

  3. Users did not understand how championship points were awarded for participation in sports events. The formula was often presented in the championship description, and users had to calculate the result manually.

  4. For training championships, users did not understand how to properly record their training.

Design

To solve these problems, I made the following changes to the competition service:

Championship Intro Section

The championship intro section was updated to include only the championship's name and date. I added the number of registered participants and a progress bar of completed stages to understand if there is someone to compete with and how long you can compete.

Overview Page

This page is the page section of the championships. It contains several sections:

1. Championship Description

A brief text description of the championship is displayed with the possibility to read more information. Information about the organizer and the position of the championship is also displayed here.

2. How to Take Part

This special section contains the steps that need to be completed to participate in the championship. It also contains information on how to connect an activity tracker for training championships.

3. Participants' Activity

This section displays the current activity of the championship participants on the map, as well as the statistics of the championship. It shows that it is worth taking part in the championship and that there is someone to compete with.

4. Nominations

I analyzed all possible nominations for the championships and created a universal nomination card. In the most complete form, it displays the nomination title, rules, and awards of the nomination, the ability to calculate points in the calculator, as well as the TOP3 of the nomination’s current rating and the TOP3 of the most active participants in the nomination.

5. Upcoming Stages

This section displays three upcoming events and participation which will bring points to the participant of the championship.

6. Support

This section enables users to send their questions to the organizer and find out all the contacts of the organizer.

7. Partners

This section provides information about the championship's partners.

Championship Stages Page

This page contains all upcoming stages of the championship (events). The stages can be viewed on a list or on a map. It is possible to filter stages by sport, date and sport discipline, event rating, and availability.

Rating Page

This page displays the rating of participants in each of the nominations, with the ability to find the right participant for the championship through search or filtering.

Detailed Result Page

For each type of championship (individual, club, and team), a detailed result page was developed. The page shows the current result in the nomination, as well as the results for each stage of the championship. For the teams and clubs pages, there is a tab with the results of team/club members.

Outcome

By designing these layouts for the four pages, I was able to address the issues identified in the research and provide a more user-friendly and intuitive service for athletes, teams, and clubs on the Russia Running platform.
